How to Apply

Obtain a registration form for the Civil Service Examination from:

Registration forms must be 
original and may be handled through the mail, faxed, or e-mailed, however, the application must be in the Human Resources Department by the posted deadline on the official Temple Civil Service Announcement and not just postmarked on that date.

Job Description

  • Protects life and property by extinguishing fires.
  • Assists in fire prevention activities.
  • Assesses nature of illness or injury at emergency scenes.
  • Administers initial EMS treatment.
  • Performs rescue operations.
  • Responds to emergency calls involving fire, EMS and hazardous materials.
  • Performs other non-emergency duties.

  

Work Hours

Typically the Fire Fighters work shift starts at 8:00a.m. and ends at 8:00a.m. the following day.  The shift is 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty.


Sign on Bonus

Individuals who are previously certified through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and have one year of paid Firefighting experience may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.

 

Who Can Be an FCRO
Persons desiring to be an FCRO must meet these basic requirements:

  • Must pass the Civil Service Written Test
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, but not have attained the age of 36 years at time of hire.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.

 

Other Information

An eligibility list is established as a result of open, competitive examinations. Applicants who possess an Honorable Discharge from any branch of the armed forces of the United States, and score a PASSING grade (70) on the entrance examination will receive an additional five (5) points on their final grade. To receive the five (5) points, you must turn in a DD214 with your application OR present a copy at the time of the examination.

Applicants who pass the Civil Service Examination
AND who are considered for appointment as either a fire control rescue officer or fire control rescue officer/trainee, are required to pass each phase of the following selection process:

  • Essential job function test.
  • Background investigation.
  • Complete an oral interview with an oral interview board.
  • Work fitness medical exam including drug testing.
  • Be able to pass an eye exam; 20/100 uncorrected. (Exceptions may be granted)
  • Psychological exam.

Once started, the duration of the selection process usually lasts less than one (1) month.


Eligibility Test

The Eligibility List is established as a result of the final examination scores and the list is valid for ONE (1) YEAR, unless it is otherwise exhausted. Civil Service Law requires the candidates be considered in the order they appear on the list as the vacancies occur.


Re-application

Applicants who do not pass the written examination and/or fail to complete the Selection Process, will not be considered for appointment as a fire control rescue officer for the duration of that current eligibility list. These applicants may reapply and retest for the next posted Civil Service examination.


Residency Requirement

Applicant must be able to respond to a civil emergency within a thirty (30) minute travel response time. (Condition of Employment)


No Tobacco Use Requirement

Applicant must agree not to use tobacco products of any kind, both on or off duty, while an officer with the Temple Fire Department. (Condition of Employment)


Physical Assessment Test

Applicant must agree to take and pass an annual essential job function test. (Condition of Employment)
